Mentorship is an intensive leadership program for ages 8 to 13 designed to engage the student on a captivating adventure (in the field, in the arts, culinary arts, or land stewardship). The extreme fun of mentorship creates the inherent and natural desire to continue the assignments and learning independently. The relationship between the mentor and the mentee is ongoing, inside and outside of class, while cultivating a love for the environment and the community. Mentorship is where connections and lifelong friends are made. It's where magic happens and where a deep transformation occurs. Its where goals are set, made and accomplished. Its where a true and deep connection to the environment and each other happens!
Mentorship students must apply for an interview before being accepted into the program.
To maintain quality, the group is capped at 5 students

Mugwort’s is a weekly hands-on, out-in-the-field, multidisciplinary program. This year’s theme is the Science of Transformations. Which includes biological transformations, geological transformations, and chemical transformations in nature, as well as transformations that come from plant medicine making and use. Students will also be covering social emotional learning topics and learn pre/post documentary making to document their year. The class will take place at various locations in Orange County, which include OC parks, beaches, and the Newport Back Bay Science Center.
Throughout the program, students will engage in hands-on activities and experiments, as well as discussions and research projects, to deepen their understanding of each topic. They will have opportunities to explore how these different types of transformations are interconnected, helping them to develop a more holistic understanding of the world around them.
THIS IS A YEAR LONG COMMITMENT CLASS. The price listed is per semester. You will automatically be enrolled for the Spring. If you don't continue for Spring Semester there will be a 10% fee (of the cost of the class) to cover finding a replacement.

Redwood Raven School teaches long-term projects, where students learn to be patient as they work through all aspects of problem-solving. To solve the problems of our planet, students need to first learn to solve problems on our own campus through different stewardship practices.

A unit study works by capturing a child's attention and helping them understand the pieces of the whole as they fit together. Join us in this weekly day program as we explore various Cycles through the lens of Science, Social Studies and the Art outdoors in nature.
Every week, students will be covering 3 subjects and will rotate between 3 teachers.

EXPLORE. CREATE. CONNECT. GROW
Art and Wilderness Institute is an Institute dedicated to strengthening appreciation and understanding of and connecting with nature through all methods of learning. Our unique classes are geared towards having participants gain an authentic connection with the natural world and raise awareness to promote stewardship values.
Art and Wilderness Institute is not just a school, it's a community meant for every age, every background.
We give back to our community through our learning process. Students have planted trees, worked on rehabilitating wetlands, cleaned up over 300 lbs of trash, helped refugees and led hikes for the elderly. Our model is that true learning comes through stewardship and service. We partner with many organizations to give back.
Currently our classes are held in Southern California (Mostly Orange County and Inland Empire)
THE STORY OF HOW WE BEGAN
Art and Wilderness Institute "AWI" was founded in 2019 but had been operating on a smaller scale prior to that. Students that are part of Art and Wilderness Institute had been learning with Sama Wareh before the inception of AWI. One day on a camping trip together, Khadeeja Abdullah, Sama Wareh and Syma Aslam Chaudhry were sitting underneath an Elderberry tree talking about how to make room for more of the community to participate in classes & events. They came up with a plan and thus AWI was formed.
They wanted a place where community was built around the central idea of connecting with nature while also giving back. It has been a wonderful journey thanks to the support of our community and due to the fact that parents and students take initiative and take charge.

The Outdoorswomen Club
is an Art and Wilderness Institute Club designed to create a space for women only (No Kids or Men) to get outdoors, get comfortable with different trails, and meet other women who also want to develop an appreciation for the outdoors. It is also a space where you can have a set time to exercise, nature journal outdoors, draw, or do whatever it is that fills your spirit with appreciation for the beauty and wonder of nature, while also resetting your "you-time".
The goal is that if you are comfortable on different trails, you can also take your kids there and teach them some of what you learn on the hikes. Once you get familiar with the trails and plants, you will also have the opportunity later on to help lead hikes for Art and Wilderness Institute if you wish to do so.
